On 1 March, 10 most outstanding events and personalities were honoured at the concert hall “Gors” in Rēzekne. One of the winners of the Latgalian Culture Award “Boņuks” is Daugavpils theatre for the play “Kaids nūteikti atīs” – adaptation of a Norwegian writer and playwright, Nobel Prize laureate Jun Fosse in Latgalian.

Production of the play was initiated by Stefan Eriksson, Director of the Nordic Council of Ministers Office in Latvia, and the premiere took place on 16 October during the annual Nordic Days. The production was praised for its original vision and multi-layered interpretation not only by the local audience, but also by guests from Norway who were already familiar with the work of Jon Fosse. Directed by Oļegs Šapošņikovs, this work is a bold addition to the repertoire of Daugavpils theatre in the Latgalian language. The premiere was also attended by the Norwegian Ambassador Ine Måreng and Siri Løkholm Ramberg from Det Norske Teatret and the International Fosse Festival.

“This is the first time that a play from another nation has been translated into Latgalian. And for the first time on the Daugavpils theatre stage, the small [New] Norwegian language meets the small Latgalian language, building a bridge between people who, as it turns out, have so much in common.”

     – Description of the nomination

In total, 127 applications were submitted with 30 applicants selected by a jury committee for further consideration. Jury consisted of previous award winners, media representatives and public activists of Latgalian culture. The criteria for evaluation were the quality of the nominee’s performance, activity throughout the year, resonance in the region, the country or on a wider scale, represenationof Latgalian values and sustainability, namely, the scope of positive long-term impact for the Latgalian culture. The award ceremony was hosted by Andris Keišs, actor of Jaunais Rīgas teātris, and Jānis Pampe, actor of the Rēzeknes Tautas teātris. The award was received by two actors of Daugavpils teātris: Zanda Mankopa and Ritvars Gailums.
